About Our Speaker
John Ashford is Chairman and CEO of The Hawthorn Group, an Alexandria, Virginia-based international public affairs firm he founded nearly 30 years ago. The firm has worked for heavily regulated industries in all 50 states, including extensively in West Virginia, where Ashford’s mentor, the late Matt Reese, got his political start.
Before turning to corporate public affairs, he has run dozens of political campaigns, including in the Mountain State, and the firm has worked for clients in more than 20 foreign countries. A former country-and-western disc jockey, Ashford is a Missouri native, where the Kansas City Star called the then 27-year-old operative “a political king-maker.” He is a classics graduate of Missouri Valley College – where his father was a Hall of Fame football coach – and received his Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University.
